Brennan Shares Tips on Hurricane Preparedness Part 1

Hurricane season is always a threat to our beautiful tropical paradise. Homeowners across the islands should take time each year to review and update their hurricane preparedness plans. Kapili Solar Roofing’s Brennan Leong recently shared his tips for success with HI Now host Kainoa Carlson. Here’s a recap of their conversation and what Hawaii homeowners can do now to protect themselves during a hurricane:

Be Proactive

Brennan believes that being a proactive homeowner is one of the defenses against storm damage. This means staying ahead of any repairs or tasks to be done on the home, both inside and outside.

Blog Photos-3“When a storm hits, our team usually gets flooded with calls for repairs. We work 6 to 7 days per week around the clock to secure everyone’s home and rebuild or fix issues that compromise their living spaces. We find that homeowners that take action before the storm usually have less damage. It’s better and less stressful for homeowners to take care of any issues before the storm.”

Have Your Roof Inspected

It's important to have your roof inspected before a hurricane hits. A roof inspection can identify any potential problems with your roof that could lead to water damage during a hurricane. If there are any leaks or damage, you can have them fixed before the storm hits. A good roof inspection will also ensure that your roof is properly sealed and in good condition so it can withstand high winds and rain.

It also makes it easier to tie any roof damage to the hurricane for insurance purposes. Your homeowner’s insurance company may want proof that any roof damage, however minor it may be, was caused by the hurricane. Having a recent inspection record can support your claim to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

If you haven't had your roof inspected recently, now is the time to do it.

Take Photos of Your Home, Property, and Valuables

When a hurricane is headed your way, it's important to take pictures of your home and belongings. These photos will help with insurance claims and proving damage after the storm.

Photos also help you remember what your home looked like before the storm. This can be helpful if you need to make an insurance claim for damage that wasn't caused by the hurricane. It also gives your roofers or other construction crews an idea of how to restore your home if it experiences significant damage.

“Kapili Solar Roofing takes the headache out of the planning process. A lot of times, we see customers not knowing what order to do things in. By working with us, we can help to create a plan for restoring their home and make it as easy as possible.”

Explore Your Roofing Options

A strong, secure roof gives you the best chance of weathering a hurricane. However, it’s not always foolproof. Strong winds can knock down trees or power poles or send debris flying through the air. If your roof does experience an impact, it’s a good idea to already have a plan in place.

Knowing your roofing options can help you streamline your roof replacement. For instance, Kapili Solar Roofing is leading the photovoltaic roofing movement here in Hawaii. Unlike traditional solar panels that attach to roofs via mounting racks, our solutions integrate directly within the roof. It provides a consistent, seamless appearance and is at the forefront of solar roofing technology.

Something else to consider is the benefits of solar roofing during or after a hurricane. While many homes and businesses may lose power, homes with solar panels may be able to avoid disruption. Even on cloudy days and during rainstorms, solar panels continue to receive power from the sun and can keep your home running.

“We’re very customer-centric and use a lot of technology that always makes it better for the homeowners and business owners we work with. We offer roofing options that you won’t find just anywhere.”
